Capital Area Team Sports wrapped up the 13th season of its Independent Flag Football League by celebrating "Super Saturday," a marathon day of flag football that culminated with the Rocky Mount Raiders earning a 25-22 win over the Gunslingers in the league's championship game, Grand Bowl XIII.

Mackenzie Armwood intercepted a Marcus Johnson pass on the Gunslingers opening drive, then caught two of Jason Battle's four touchdown passes (among them, the game-winning score with just :45 remaining) to earn Most Valuable Player honors.

Rocky Mount earned their trip to Grand Bowl XIII by earning wins over the Dragons (32-26 in a Wild Card playoff) and Apex Stingrays (32-27 in the Divisional Playoff round) while the Gunslingers defeated the Revolution (28-21 in the Wild Card round) and the Rolesville Thunder (26-19 in the Divisional Playoffs) to advance to the big dance.  A complete rundown of Grand Bowl XIII and all the postseason games can be viewed by clicking here and visiting our IFFL web site.

Following an unusually high and sustained level of player interest for slots on our Carolina Colts and Raleigh Red Devils men's softball team this spring, Capital Area Team Sports is giving what Executive Director D.P. McIntire called "strong consideration" to debuting a third men's softball team this fall!

The team, which at this point is unnamed and in planning stages, would take the field alongside our two existing men's teams, the Carolina Colts and Raleigh Red Devils.  In the meantime, we encourage those who have an interest in playing softball with us this fall to contact us (through the "Contact Us" link at left) - presuming we go forward with a third team, we're likely to begin tryouts sometime in early June!

Capital Area Team Sports is currently considering plans to launch a weeknight mixed bowling league beginning in 2008-09.

The league, which has yet to be named, would allow both teams and individuals to register for the season, which is expected to run 14 weeks.  True to CATS penchant for innovation, the league would feature some unique aspects.  "We're looking at some innovative ways of determining league standings," explained CATS Executive Director D.P. McIntire.  "Specifics haven't been determined as yet, but match and even individual head-to-head play within a match may factor into it."

Cost for the league would be $280 per player for the entire season ($ 1,000 for a team of five), and CATS is now conducting a preliminary "headcount" of people interested in participating.  So if you'd care to roll with us this winter, click on the Contact Us link at left and choose "Request Information."  Should we have sufficient interest (enough players to organize at least 6 teams), we'll take to the lanes shortly after Thanksgiving!

WHAT DOES "AMICITIA PER CONTENDO" MEAN?

The slogan adorns our new web presence in big bold letters, "Amicitia per Contendo."  But what does it mean?

Simply stated, Amicitia per Contendo means "Friendship through Competition," and its an attitude that's pervasive throughout CATS and its over 200 members.

Whether someone plays as a member of our men's softball or basketball teams, or as part of our Independent Flag Football League, each participant in a CATS program helps comprise a large family of friends - helping one another on the field in sports, and off it in our lives.
