With the Independent Flag Football League's teams aligned into five divisions for the Spring 2008 season, Capital Area Team Sports has expanded the league's playoff format.
The champions of the league's five divisions (the Rolesville Thunder from the Bell Division, the Mean Machine from the Halas Division, the Rocky Mount Raiders from the Lombardi Division, the Gunslingers from the Rooney Division, and the Assassins from the Rozelle Division) qualified for the Grand Bowl XIII playoffs, as did three "wild card" qualifiers (non-division champions with the league's three best records: the Apex Stingrays, Revolution and Dragons, respectively).
The teams were seeded based on their regular season records (division champions received seeds #1 through #5, with wild card qualifiers being seeded #6 through #8). The teams then advance to Wild Card Playoff Games, the first of a three-round playoff bracket culminating in our championship game, Grand Bowl XIII.
While only the "Great Eight" make it to the playoffs, four other IFFL teams (the Silverbacks, Youngsville Aftershock, Cary Redhawks and Heritage Pride) qualified for a non-championship postseason event, our "Best of the Rest" tournament, which is held concurrently with the playoffs.
And while Grand Bowl XIII is the ultimate destination for every team in the IFFL when the season begins, ten of the twelve teams that qualify for the postseason will nonetheless have an opportunity for bowl game glory thanks to our own version of the NCAA's postseason bowl games. The Grand Bowl of course serves as our championship game, but those teams that fail to reach the pinnacle can nonetheless compete in the Oak City Bowl, as well as the Banana, Cereal, Chili and Soup Bowls, respectively - giving them an opportunity to play for bragging rights to take into next season.
