Capital Area Team Sports is unique among non-profit organizations in that it has a clear separation between membership in the organization and participation in its amateur sports programs. Someone can be a member and not take to a field or court in any CATS program, while someone could play in one of our leagues for 10 years and not be a member.
There's one, and for all intent and purpose only one, distinction between a participant in a CATS program and a member of the organization - voting. CATS members have a voice and vote in organization affairs, and while non-member participants definitely have a voice in how their particular program is run, ultimately the final word rests within the members, who have the votes.
Capital Area Team Sports has four membership categories:
Charter Members
Charter members are the founders of the organization, eight in number. Each has enhanced voting rights compared to other categories of membership, but for those rights pays a premium ($100.00 per year, to be precise) in annual dues.
Club Members
Club members are those people who operate individual teams under the auspices of the organization (e.g., the operator of a team in our Independent Flag Football League). Each enjoys voting rights on both organization-wide matters as well as those specific to their particular program, and is exempt from payment of annual dues thanks to the payment of seasonal team entry fees.
Individual Members
Individual members can be anyone who wishes to aid Capital Area Team Sports in the pursuit of its mission and objectives. Individual members enjoy voting rights identical to club members, and pays annual dues of $25.00 per year. It is not necessary to hold membership to participate in a CATS sports program (flag football, softball, etc.), however.
Youth Members
Youth memberships exist for those who wish to take part in CATS activities but are under the age of 18. Youth membership is free, but does not convey any voting or other specific rights of membership.
